FSU School of Theatre presents ‘The Sins of Sor Juana’

Florida State University’s School of Theatre presents Karen Zacarías’ award-winning play, “The Sins of Sor Juana,” inspired by the life and work of 17th-century Latin American poet and philosopher Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz.
Even under the Inquisition’s eye, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz’s poetry blazed with passion and defiance, igniting independent thought among elite women. Threatened by her sway, her adversaries hired a rogue to tame her. Their fiery, witty and romantic battle left one question: Who would surrender? Karen Zacarías’ award-winning play proves that well-behaved women rarely make history.
“Sor Juana’s story is one of resilience, intellect and the fight for self-expression against a world that seeks to silence strong spirits,” said Monika Gossmann, assistant professor of performance. “Through a dynamic fusion of dance, song, Indigenous movement and sword fighting, our talented cast brings this powerful narrative to life with authenticity and passion. This production is a celebration of Hispanic heritage and an invitation for audiences to engage with a story that transcends time.”
